Nature reclaiming the industrial heritage of Wales and the Welsh slate quarries
The men of Wales toiled for over a hundred years in inhospitable, hard and often dangerous conditions to mine and quarry the slate that still keeps our buildings dry today. When the slate mines and quarries closed in the 1900s the workers left behind a rich industrial heritage that nature is fast reclaiming - this is my tribute to those brave and hardy souls who toiled so long and so hard.
Abereiddy, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Abereiddy is a small coastal hamlet on the northern coast of the St Davids peninsula. The beach has dark sand composed of the grey slate which was quarried beside the beach. The same slate gives a deep blue colour to what is now called the Blue Lagoon which is the breached quarry. The coastal walk from Porthgain to Aberreidy is very popular.
